Oxleys Crossing to Darby Falls
From Oxleys Crossing we continued along the Oxley Highway to the junction with the Newell Highway north of Coonabarabran then stopped in Coonabarabran for some food shopping before continuing along the combined Newell and Oxley Highways to Gilgandra where the Oxley heads off to the west while the Newell Highway goes south. The land between Coonabarabran and Gilgandra reaches 700 metres, quite high for the Newell which tends to remain between 200 and 300 metres between the Victorian and Queensland borders. Around this part the highway is crossing the approaches to the Warrambungle Ranges and has to increase its elevation accordingly.
From Gilgandra we continued across grazing and cropping country to Dubbo where we left the Newell Highway on the Mitchell Highway passing though Wellington and Molong turning onto lesser road to go through Canowindra and Cowra. This latter section passed through extensive croplands which had mostly been harvested. From Cowra we followed the GPS to a rest area near Darbys Falls we had used before and stopped there for the night sharing it with a dozen sulphur-crested cockatoos screeching in the trees above us.
