16 August 2006 - Katherine
Quiet day in Katherine. We had visited nearby Katherine Gorge in our 2004 visit; that was an excellent place to visit but we didn't feel any need to go there again. In the morning we went into Katherine township (6.3 km from the caravan park) for some bits and pieces. I filled up with petrol at the first Woolworths station we've seen since leaving Perth. The discount price was 137.9 cents in Katherine; this compares with petrol price of 169.7 cents at Timber Creek, less than 300 kilometres away. 31.8 cents per litre for freight (or whatever reason is given for the price difference) for 300 kilometres is not credible.
In the afternoon we spent some time with maps working out our movements for the next few weeks until we reach Winton in Queensland; we talked for a while about possible movements after that. I rang a Darwin caravan park to book for our planned stay and was told there was no need to book because it's getting hot in Darwin and caravans are leaving. We didn't quite know what to make of that statement.
