Travelling Australia - Journal 2006
9-14 March 2006 - Adelaide

Location map The caravan park we had selected in Adelaide was nicely located within walking distance of a train station, so we could get into Adelaide easily by train and not have to worry about car-parking. It was also a short drive from the very large Marion shopping centre and reasonable driving distance from other interesting parts of Adelaide. The weather during our stay in Adelaide was generally quite hot and we were lucky there was a leafy tree beside our site. A cool change reduced temperatures and bought some rain in the last few days but it was still fairly warm.

On the 11th we drove to the nearby beach-side suburb of Glenelg in mid-morning and wandered around for a while, visiting the Discovery Centre dealing with the history of white settlement in the Glenelg area. The afternoon was spent in the shade outside the van; the temperature inside reached 44 degrees, it was about 39 outside the van in the shade. We were fortunate that a leafy tree shaded the Territory and provided sufficient additional shade for our two chairs; although we did have to keep moving during the afternoon to stay in the shade. It was still so hot in the evening that we ate our evening salad outside. The sun had pretty well set by then but it was still hot inside the van. At 10:00 o'clock it was still 26 degrees.

The day before we left Adelaide we drove to Mclaren Vale in mid-morning, stopping at the Information Centre before driving around Tourist Route 60 through the village and surrounding vineyards. We find these self-drive tours usually interesting as they allow us to go at our own speed and stop if we wish; this one was no exception.
