Surat (population 436 in the 2006 census) is on the Balonne River south of Roma. Surat was established as an administrative centre in a growing pastoral region in 1850. A court of petty sessions and hotel were soon established and a township surveyed in 1863; but growth was slow and Surat was gradually eclipsed by Roma, especially after the western railway line was routed through Roma. In 1879 Cobb & Co established a coach service from St George to Surat and the final Cobb & Co coach service left Surat in August 1924 for Yuleba. Fishing in the river is a major activity and the river is regularly restocked with Murray Cod and Yellow Belly fingerlings. In 2008 Waroo Shire ceased to exist after 105 years of activity when the area was amalgamated and Surat is now in the Maranoa Regional Council.
