Portland on the western coast of Victoria is the only major port between Melbourne and Adelaide. Population is 9,716 (2006 census). This is service centre for the surrounding agricultural region and port for exporting grain, livestock, woodchips and timber sourced locally. Portland is also the centre of substantial wind farming enterprises and hosts a significant commercial fishing fleet. The aluminium refinery on the edge of the town is a substantial employer. Alumina arrives in bulk by ship and most finished aluminium ingots leave by sea. Portland Bay provides little natural shelter from Bass Strait weather and shelter for shipping movements was a problem for many years until part of the south-west corner of the bay was enclosed by breakwaters forming a large body of sheltered water.  More
