Painted Desert
Coloured outcrop Previous photograph Thumbnails Next photograph
Various shades of colour in an outcrop. The role of the harder silcrete cap in preventing erosion of the lower, softer material is clear; but the silcrete cap is itself being slowly weathered, with pieces broken off on the left, and will eventually be removed allowing the underlying material to weather away.
