Mitchell (population 944 in the 2006 census) is on the Warrego Highway between Brisbane and Charleville and on the Maranoa River. The area was explored in 1846 by Thomas Mitchell and a pastoral run (named Mitchell Downs) was later established and formed a base for the township of Mitchell Downs. The name Mitchell was adopted in 1878. The Western Railway reached the town across the new Maranoa River bridge in 1885 and the town developed as a service centre for the surrounding pastoral region. For most of the twentieth century Mitchell was the administrative centre for former Booringa Shire which was amalgamated into the Maranoa Region local government area.
