The Great Alpine Road connects Wangaratta in North-East Victoria with Bairnsdale in Gippsland via Mount Hotham in the Australian Alps. The road is fully sealed but the Mount Hotham section is above the winter snow-line and care is required in winter. From Wangaratta the road runs up the Ovens River valley to Harrietville, then climbs steeply up the face of the mountain range to be above both the snowline and the treeline for a gentle climb to Hotham Village, near the summit of Mt Hotham. From Hotham Village the road descends steadily to Omeo, this road is not as steep as the climb up from Harrietville though, then follows the Tambo River through grazing land and forest for much of the way to Bairnsdale and the end of the Great Alpine Road .
